Now you know what your are going to make, you're able to choose a suitable fabric. Perhaps the type of fabric is mentioned in the pattern. If not, hopefully you can find one with this overview of types and structures.
As you probably know, there are a lot of different types of fabric. Here are some common types with their properties:
- Cotton: a soft, fluffy staple fiber fabric, used for textile products as t-shirts, jeans (denim) and towels
- Polyester: a strong, wrinkle resistant, quick drying fabric, used for clothing, pillows and curtains. Because it is not breathable, this type of fabric is not very suitable for summer apparel.
- Rayon (viscose) a light-weighted, soft and smooth fabric, used for clothing like dresses, blouses and
sarees.
- Silk: a soft, shiny, light-weighted and breathable fabric, used for comfortable, delicate pieces as shirts, blouses, camisoles and coats.
- Linen: a smooth, strong and quick drying fabric, used for summer apparel and table cloths. Comfortably in hot weather, but wrinkles easily.
For fabrics different structures can be used, which give the fabric specific properties. Think about satin, canvas, jersey or voile. Important properties are the elasticity and the weight. Of course, you don't want a heavy fabric for a summer dress and for tight apparel a stretch fabric is necessary.
